In January our theme for the month was Explorers.

1st class learned all about the lives of a few explorers and then made a project about an explorer of their choice.

We looked at the life of Amelia Earhart, the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. 1st class decided that she was a great explorer because she inspired woman all over the world to follow their dreams. We watched videos, read stories and did a quiz all about Amelia’s life. We made timelines, designed stamps and wrote letters to Amelia. We even made lighthouses just like the one built in her memory.

We then looked at some polar explorers from Ireland: Tom Crean and Ernest Shackleton. We learned about their lives and their expeditions to Antarctica. We took pride in knowing that Ernest Shackleton was form Kildare! 1st class got the chance to visit the Ernest Shackleton exhibition in the Athy Heritage centre in January. We learned so much and took part in a fun quiz about his life! Finally, we formed penguins from clay just like the ones our polar explorers might have seen.
