November in Seamus’ Class

We had a wonderful month in Seamus’ 5th class. With everything from square roots to the Aztecs, there was plenty of fun and learning.
In English we explored our imaginations with narrative writing. The children had a great time creating wonderful passages inspired by their own thoughts and interests.

In maths we covered lines and angles, number theory, fractions and problem solving. There was great progress in solving difficult multi-step problems and the children’s confidence in their ability has really grown.

Críochnaíomar ‘An Scoil’ i rith an Samhain agus bhogamar ar aghaidh go dtí ‘Bia’ i nGaeilge. Bhain na páistí taitneamh as na cluichí spraoiúil agus na hamhráin a rinneamar le linn an mhí.

In History, we focused on the Aztecs and the age of exploration, paying particular attention to the fall of the great Aztec empire and the life of the Irish explorer Tom Crean. The children really enjoyed exploring websites and using their new Microsoft Teams page to learn all about these topics.

For Geography, we discussed the uses of rivers in Ireland and other countries and discovered that many people and industries rely on rivers every day.

We conducted an interesting experiment which involved soaking some chicken bones in vinegar. Our results showed us that the bones broke much more easily after being soaked in the vinegar. We concluded that the vinegar had dissolved the calcium in the bones which keeps the bones strong and rigid, making it easier to break the bones.

In the arts subjects we started getting excited for Christmas early by designing our Christmas cards that some children had printed for sending to close friends and relatives this Christmas. We also designed our own snow globes where the children were able to put a picture of themselves inside the wonderful design.
We have been practicing our songs for the virtual winter concert and we created our own ‘sketches from our tables’ that we will be sharing with you soon.
